What is #songforthepeople?
SONG FOR THE PEOPLE is an original song in aid of NHS Charities Together, written by Emma Rowland, Founder of Sing out Strong, to provide hope and solidarity to all those around the world affected by COVID-19. The song is the basis of the #songforthepeople project.
The song launched through the Virtual Choir project run by us, during lockdown. Sing out Strong normally runs choirs and social-singing groups in the UK, to help improve mental health and wellbeing. But, when the world went into lockdown, we set up Virtual Choir Practice to allow people to come together in song, to feel a part of something bigger in the world and to support one another through isolation. You can find out more about the Virtual Choir here >> Through the single, we want to raise awareness of the important work of the NHS during this health crisis, and so we have set up a linked JustGiving page to enable people to donate whatever they can to the NHS Charities Together fund. The aim of the project
SONG FOR THE PEOPLE has been made into a virtual choir video, whereby voices from all over the world were layered over one another and edited to become one huge "choir" - even though we have never met! We owe a huge thank you to Simon Hopkins of Tewkesbury TV, who contributed the studio production and mix free of charge!
We are asking everyone to spread the message of #songforthepeople around the world. Please share the lyrics with a friend online, sing a part of the song at home, whistle the tune, record yourself performing it, share it with your children, recite it as a poem, arrange it into a new song or just sing it in the shower. Share your story of #songforthepeople with us on our Facebook page and tell us how you are helping to spread love and hope around at this difficult time. Each time you mention it, don't forget to use the hashtag too!
